The passport choice comes first for travellers from Ireland

Irish passport holders taking a short Sri Lankan holiday can normally use the Tourist ETA process before travel. The complete application price displayed through this website is $99. The key decision for many Ireland-based travellers is which passport will actually be used.

An Irish resident may hold an Irish passport, a British passport or another nationality. Select the nationality printed on the document presented for the journey. An Irish address, EU residence right or departure from Dublin does not change passport nationality. Dual citizens should not apply with one passport and check in with another.

Build an Ireland-specific checklist

• Exact travel passport and readable identity-page image
• Requested portrait and Sri Lankan arrival date
• First accommodation name, address and contact
• Accessible email, onward plan and online payment card

Compare the number, expiry date and full name against the physical passport. If a middle name is printed, do not remove it because a booking abbreviates it. Saved airline and browser profiles can contain an expired document.

Complete the application using the travel document

Dublin, Belfast and UK connection planning

A trip may depart through Dublin, Belfast, London or another European hub. Departure airport does not define nationality. With separate tickets, check baggage transfer and whether a terminal change requires entry permission. Irish and British passport holders travelling together must each use the correct nationality.

Irish and British passports in the same household

Families living in Ireland may travel with a mixture of Irish and British passports. Treat each document independently. A Belfast departure does not make an Irish passport British, and a Dublin address does not make a British passport Irish. If a child holds a different passport from a parent, the child’s application must follow the child’s document.

Dual citizens should choose one passport for the complete Sri Lankan journey. Store the approval with that document and use the same passport during airline check-in. Changing the chosen passport after submission can leave the approval connected to a document that is not presented.

Departing through Dublin, Belfast or Great Britain

Many itineraries from Ireland connect through London, Doha, Dubai, Istanbul or another hub. Confirm whether the domestic or UK sector and the long-haul flight share one booking. A self-transfer can involve baggage collection, terminal travel and additional border requirements. Check those requirements before relying on a short connection.

Use the date the final flight is due in Sri Lanka. An evening flight from Dublin can arrive two calendar days later after a long connection. Keep the itinerary and approval downloaded because roaming or airport Wi-Fi may fail.

Card authentication in Ireland

Irish banks commonly use app confirmation or a one-time security step. Begin payment only when the cardholder has the registered phone. If the bank authorises a transaction but the application page does not update, record the reference and check status instead of opening several new applications.
